Sziasztok mindenkinek! (Hello everyone). This is Professor Hanson (Bruce to the students), reporting in a day late. So if you happen to be reading this now, pretend that it is the 16th of January and not the 17th or sometime later. Also you might want to pretend that you can see the pictures that I was not able to post. My computer does not like me sometimes.
Here's a quick rundown of the day:
In the morning math: Ridiculously short. We were finished in a little over an hour. The students all complained about this, but I tried to explain to them that there is more to life than math (sometimes).
Have a great picture of them hard at work that is totally staged, but looks rather believable but as you know (if you were paying attention to the intro) my computer is not cooperating with me in this regard.
After a luxurious 2 hour lunch break, Andras Nagy, a Hungarian philosopher and playwright, gave a presentation on communism in Hungary, by Andras Nagy, whose mother and grandmother survived the German concentration camps in WWII. I had a good picture of him too, but, well, you know what, I guess.
After the talk by Andras back to the hotel for 2 office hour sessions (4-6) and (8-10) in the Pesti Barnabas room on the second floor of the hotel. (Which would be called the 3rd floor if the hotel were in the USA. Here, as elsewhere in Europe the ground floor is level 0.) Great pictures of this also. Just use your imagination!
All through the day the students were fighting back tears thinking of the imminent departure of Jill, our support person and general all-around mother hen from IOS (the office of international studies at St. Olaf). Jill was leaving on the 17th and everyone was wondering how we would survive without her. The students realize that from now on they will need to deal with their crabby old professor. Sigh....
That's it for the day from Professor Hanson (Bruce). The students take over again on Friday. You can expect lots of pictures from them in the next few days. They are all traveling to either Bratislava or Vienna for the first free weekend.
Jo ejszakat Budapestrol!
