A Sunday in Eger

Sziasztok! Anders, Ethan, Josh, and Tim of Room 453 are back to bring you our adventures from today. Our morning started off as usual with our hotel breakfast at 7:30, which felt very early after our long hiking trip yesterday. Regardless, it was soon time to get on the bus to the train station. Anders almost missed us leaving due to an elevator incident, but luckily all was well and he was able to join us right on time.

After a quick bus ride we arrived at Keleti Pályudvar, where we met up with our Hungarian friends Anna, Emese, and Viktor, who would be joining us on the trip to Eger.

There we boarded this train, which we were on for a whole 140 minutes, getting to see the Hungarian countryside before arriving in Eger! Emese led us through the Archbishop Garden to the town's basilica. Even though it was being renovated, it was cool to go inside and see what was there.

From here, we walked across the square into the one of the college buildings in town, where we climbed many flights of stairs to the first of many interactive science exhibits on display. Here's Anders balancing the pressure of an underwater tube to keep it at a constant depth.

It was then time for more climbing, this time all the way to the top of the building for a view and interesting demonstration, where one of the employees demonstrated the use of the camera obscura, the oldest of its kind in continental Europe!

After taking in these incredible views, it was time for a late lunch: a three-course meal at 1552, a restaurant located in the Eger Castle. We all sampled various soups, meat and chicken, and all of the desserts they had to offer. Overall, none of us had any complaints; it was very good!

Although we were all in a food coma from that delicious meal, our Hungarian friends had yet another surprise for us: a game! To help us improve our language skills, we all got cards with numbers to put on our heads (see above). The goal was to eliminate the other team by reading their number while protecting your own identity. It was a hard fought two games, but unfortunately our team couldn't pull off a win. :(

With sunlight fading, we walked back down into town for a brief and quirky tour of wine cellars and tunnels underneath Eger. Alas, our time in this new place had come to a close and it was time to hustle back to the station to board our train back to Budapest.

Upon arrival, our room split up to go different places for dinner. Tim and Josh went to a barbecue joint in the Jewish Quarter, where they enjoyed phenomenal pulled pork sandwiches and lemonade. Anders went a wok bar with another group of students to enjoy some green curry. Ethan took a much simpler approach and went back to the hotel for some cereal and homework.

Now it's time to get recharged for the tough week of classes ahead!
