The day started bright and early (7am!) for about half the group as they went on a 12-mile hike on the Buda side. Hannah went and had a blast, but Meredith and Emma decided to pass on the hike and spend the day exploring other parts of the city.
The hikers departed from the hotel at 7:10am to catch a train to their hiking spot (and see the sunrise!)
Once they arrived, their guide, Zoltan, lead them on their hike around the hills above Buda. They came across A LOT of amazing views and visited three super cool lookout towers.
Their final destination was the highest point in Budapest; check out this view!!
After 12+ miles of hilly terrain, they descended the hills via chairlift and headed back to the hotel, tired but satisfied.
Back at the hotel, Meredith and Emma started their day a little later at the hotel breakfast with some other students who stayed back. After some research, they decided on a visit to Széchenyi Thermal Baths, which they are proud to say they located with no help from Prof Hanson or Emese. (They're real city gals now).
After a few hours in the baths and a wet metro ride back to the hotel, they got ready to cross the Danube and explore Buda. They were a little too cocky about their new found sense of direction, and they hopped on a random bus, hoping it would get them across the bridge. It did, but then they wandered aimlessly for an hour before actually finding the cathedral.
After finding some food at restaurant owned by Jamie Oliver and getting some desserts at Ruszwurm bakery, they headed back to the hotel where they were reunited with the hikers.
We finished off the night in true American-tourist fashion: with late night McDonald's. Overall, the 661 girls had a fantastic Saturday and can't wait for more adventures in Budapest!!
Ruszwurm is my favorite! I hope you had a slice of cream cake there. And now that you've gone to the Szechenyi thermals it's time for a Turkish experience. Go to Rudas or Kiraly--totally different from Szechenyi.
