Wednesday: with room 753

Sziasztok from room 753 (Missy, Ella, Lauren, and Abigail)!

We started our morning off with the hotel breakfast. Although we're trying to embrace the European breakfast meat plate, we miss our Malt-O-Meal.

How many math majors does it take to withdraw Hungarian currency from an ATM? Well, after breakfast, we had our first adventure of the day attempting to get forints. It only took four of us and four attempts! (Math majors have to find the best exchange rate)

Then we went to class.

After learning about colors and types of public transportation in Hungarian, we moved on to learning number theory. For all those math fans out there, we learned about the Euclidean Algorithm with the "hand waving" proof (pictured below).

Our lunch break consisted of going to an Australian themed cafe "The Goat Herder". Next time you're in Budapest, you should check it out!

After class, we worked on our homework.
And yes, we still have homework on our trip :(

Once homework was done, Lauren, Ella, and Missy went out with our Hungarian friend, Anna, to a local tea shop. We had delicious coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and kakaó! We even ordered in Hungarian (or at least tried our best).

Meanwhile, Abigail was at the professor dinner eating wonderful food! Several people even ordered flaming dessert!

Fun fact: Jane Goodall also ate at this restaurant!

Although 4 hours of class and more time spent on homework can be taxing, the real challenge came later on: Doing Laundry.

After what appeared to be a successful translation of the washing machine instructions, the worst happened. Room 753's laundry adventure brought a great flood upon the building. Luckily, Lauren, Missy, and Ella were able to successfully bail out the water and get help from the lovely employees at the hotel.

Now it's off to the sauna to relax and recharge after the difficult adventures that we had today.

Lauren Mossman - Lauren is a Math Major with a Mathematical Biology Concentration. In her free time, she likes to read, practice cello, spend time outside, and play tennis! Her role in the Laundry Fiasco was to run overflowing bowls of soapy water from the laundry room to our kitchen sink. Her favorite Hungarian word/phrase is Hogy Vagy (how are you).

Ella Koenig- Ella is a Math and Religion major with a Stats and Data Science concentration. Ella is a Star Wars and Doctor Who enthusiast, and you can find her on campus as a part of Residence Life staff, playing the trumpet or euphonium in Norseman band, and playing board games. Her role in the Great Laundry Disaster of 2020 was the initiator and the water collector. Her favorite Hungarian word is viszontlátásra (goodbye).

Missy Daniels - Missy is a Math major with a Management Studies Concentration and a Statistics and Data Science Concentration. In her free time, you can find Missy playing her Clarinet, hanging out at St. Olaf in Fireside, or watching TikTok. Her role in the Great Flood was quickly calling our favorite front desk workers for immediate assistance and media representative. Her favorite Hungarian word is jó napot (good afternoon).

Abigail Gaard - Abigail is a Math major with an Educational Studies Concentration and is working towards a math teaching license for grades 5-12. In her free time, Abigail loves watching Downton Abbey, knitting, and playing flute in Norseman. Abigail is also an SI leader for math classes at St. Olaf--Calculus this past fall, and Linear Algebra in the spring. Abigail's role in the Horrific Flood of the Laundry Room was surprisingly absent--she was innocently watching flaming desserts at the professor dinner. Her favorite Hungarian word/phrase is Köszönöm (thank you).
